SmallPDF is a polished, established PDF suite with a free tier and a paid plan. AFileFix is a free, no-signup toolkit where a meaningful share of the tools run entirely in your browser. This page compares them honestly — where AFileFix is genuinely better, and where SmallPDF is the right call.
We're careful here to state only what we can stand behind: facts about AFileFix come straight from our own codebase, and facts about SmallPDF are limited to stable, widely-documented details. For anything that changes often — exact prices, current limits, certifications — we point you to their site rather than guess.
AFileFix is for people who want a full PDF toolkit without daily limits, watermarks, or signup walls. Every tool is free for unlimited use, no account required, and 11 of 25 tools run entirely in your browser — your file never leaves your device.
SmallPDF is for people who want native mobile and desktop apps, cloud-storage integrations, and a paid plan with a company behind it. Its free tier is limited (widely reported at around two tasks per day and a small file-size cap); unlimited use requires a paid subscription.
If you're a solo user or small team doing regular PDF work in a browser, AFileFix likely saves you both money and friction. If you need apps on your phone, Google Drive/Dropbox round-trips, or formal compliance paperwork for procurement, a paid suite like SmallPDF fits better.

AFileFix values are from our codebase. SmallPDF values reflect stable, widely-reported details; figures marked "reported" come from third-party reviews, not a SmallPDF page we could confirm directly. Verify current limits and pricing on smallpdf.com.
SmallPDF's free tier is capped (commonly reported as ~2 tasks/day). Convert a PDF to Word, then merge two files, and a small daily allowance is gone. AFileFix has no daily limit on its PDF utility tools — compress, merge, split, convert, sign, edit, repair as often as you need. The AI tools (Chat with PDF, Contract Review, Invoice Scanner, Document Comparison, OCR, PDF to Excel) have per-IP daily caps because they cost real money to run.
AFileFix supports up to 50 MB per file on its server-side PDF tools. SmallPDF's free tier is widely reported to cap uploads around 5 MB. For scanned contracts, image-heavy decks, and multi-page reports, that difference often decides whether a free tool is usable at all.
AFileFix has no account system. Every tool works on first visit — no email capture, no upgrade emails. SmallPDF requires an account for unlimited use.
AFileFix never adds watermarks to any output, on any tool. On SmallPDF's free tier, basic operations are generally clean, but some features may add a watermark or restriction — check their current terms for specifics.
Eleven AFileFix tools — Split, Rotate, Delete Pages, Reorder Pages, Page Numbers, Watermark, PDF to Image, Image to PDF, Image Resizer, Social Media Resizer, and Redact PDF — run entirely in your browser. There's no upload, no server processing, no remote retention; the file is processed locally and the result downloads back to you.
Web PDF suites like SmallPDF upload your file to their servers to process it. That's normal and they delete files after processing — but for confidential documents, "never leaves your device" is a stronger guarantee than "uploaded, then deleted." For AFileFix's server tools and AI tools, files are deleted immediately after processing (typically within seconds), and PDF Pipeline tells you exactly which steps run where before you start.
SmallPDF offers native mobile apps and a browser extension. AFileFix is web-only — it works in mobile browsers, but Edit & Sign in particular is desktop-only. If you regularly process PDFs from your phone, a native app is a better fit.
SmallPDF connects to cloud storage like Google Drive and Dropbox, so you can pick a file from the cloud and save it back. AFileFix has no such integrations — you upload from your device and download back to it.
SmallPDF is an established commercial provider with a paid subscription and business-oriented features. AFileFix carries no formal compliance certifications. If your organization requires specific certifications (e.g. ISO 27001) or a signed data-processing agreement for procurement, check SmallPDF's current security/trust page — that's the authoritative source — and treat that as a point in their favor.
SmallPDF's catalog is a bit larger overall. With OCR, Redact, and PDF to Excel now in AFileFix, the remaining differences are mostly conversion variants (e.g. PDF to PowerPoint, Crop PDF) rather than core capabilities.
For everyday compress, merge, split, and PDF-to-Word, both produce comparable results on typical documents (and both struggle similarly with very complex layouts). OCR is now available on both. For non-sensitive documents, the privacy difference is academic — SmallPDF deletes after processing; AFileFix deletes immediately or never uploads.
AFileFix is free for unlimited use with no Pro tier today, and there's no account system or payment processing in the product. We plan to keep the core PDF tools free; we may add optional paid upgrades for advanced AI features in the future.
Yes. The OCR — Scan to Text tool reads scanned PDFs and photos with AI and returns the text. We also added Redact PDF and PDF to Excel recently, so several gaps that used to favor paid tools are now closed.
For the 11 browser tools (Split, Rotate, Delete, Reorder, Page Numbers, Watermark, PDF to Image, Image to PDF, Image Resizer, Social Resizer, Redact PDF), your file never leaves your device — there's no upload at all. For the server tools (Compress, Edit & Sign, Password Protect, Unlock, Repair, PDF to Word) and the AI tools, your file is uploaded over HTTPS and deleted immediately after processing. Merge PDF is hybrid (browser-first, server fallback with your consent). We don't carry formal compliance certifications, so for documents that require them — HIPAA, attorney-client privilege, classified — use offline desktop software or a certified paid provider.
Three things we can state plainly about ourselves: no daily limits on the PDF utility tools, no signup, and no watermarks — plus 11 of 25 tools that run entirely in your browser. (AI tools have per-IP daily caps because they cost real money to run.) Most free online PDF tools share at least one of those limitations.

Occasional user who needs a tool once or twice a week? SmallPDF's free tier is fine. Regular user, or privacy-conscious, or tired of signup walls? AFileFix is free for unlimited use, adds no watermarks, and keeps 11 of its tools entirely on your device.
Need native apps, cloud-storage round-trips, or formal certifications? A paid suite like SmallPDF is the right fit.

Facts about SmallPDF are limited to stable, widely-documented details; figures we label "reported" come from third-party reviews rather than a SmallPDF page we could confirm at the time of writing. We deliberately do not assert SmallPDF's current prices, exact free-tier limits, file-retention times, or specific compliance certifications — those change and are controlled by SmallPDF.
