How AFileFix's Edit & Sign works

AFileFix lets you add elements on top of an existing PDF — text boxes, signatures, dates, checkboxes, images, freehand drawings. The original PDF stays as it is; your additions are layered on top and then "flattened" into a single output file when you save.

The honest framing: this is an annotation and overlay tool, not a tool for editing the text that's already inside the PDF. If you need to change words inside an existing paragraph, that's a different workflow (convert to Word, edit, convert back).

Placement happens in your browser — you drag, resize, and position elements until they look right. Once you click Save, AFileFix processes the file on our server to flatten the elements into the PDF structure and returns the finished document. Your file is deleted from our server within minutes after processing.

What can I add to a PDF with Edit & Sign?

  • Text boxes — typed in your chosen font and size. Useful for filling form blanks, adding initials, or leaving notes.
  • Signatures — draw with your mouse or trackpad, type your name in a signature font, or upload an image of your wet signature.
  • Dates — auto-filled with today's date or typed manually.
  • Checkboxes — clickable in the editor, fixed (checked or unchecked) in the output.
  • Images — paste in a logo, photo, or scanned signature.
  • Freehand drawings — for the rare case you need to mark something up by hand.

Every element can be repositioned, resized, and adjusted before you save. AFileFix also detects fillable AcroForm fields in your PDF automatically and shows them in a separate panel so you can fill the form directly. Once you download, all elements are flattened into the PDF structure.

How do I edit and sign a PDF with AFileFix?

  1. Upload your PDF. Drop your PDF onto the upload area above (or click to browse). Up to 50 MB per file.
  2. Add elements. Click any tool in the toolbar — Text, Signature, Date, Checkbox, Image, or Draw — then click anywhere on the page to place it.
  3. Position and adjust. Drag elements to the right position. Resize by dragging corners. Use undo (Ctrl+Z) and redo if you make a mistake — AFileFix keeps 50 levels of history.
  4. Click Save. AFileFix flattens all your added elements into the PDF structure on our server and returns the finished document.
  5. Download. The result downloads as a signed PDF with your additions baked in. Your original file and the server copy are both gone — the server deletes its copy within minutes after processing.

Will my signature stay attached if someone else edits the PDF?

Yes — once AFileFix processes your PDF, signatures and other added elements are flattened into the file. They become part of the document structure rather than floating annotations on top.

Anyone opening the result sees your signature as part of the page. They can still add their own annotations or sign elsewhere, but they can't remove your signature without intentionally editing the underlying PDF (which any tampering would be visible in the file history of cryptographically-aware viewers).

Flattening also means signatures don't depend on a specific PDF viewer to render correctly — the signature looks the same whether the recipient opens it in Adobe Reader, a browser, Preview on Mac, or a mobile PDF app.

Does Edit & Sign work on mobile?

AFileFix's Edit & Sign is designed for desktop use. The precision needed to place signatures and form text exactly where you want them isn't realistic on a small touchscreen. On phone-sized screens, the editor shows a "use desktop" message rather than letting you start a frustrating experience.

Tablets in landscape orientation with a keyboard work fine — functionally similar to a laptop. We're not blocking those.

A proper mobile editor is on our roadmap, but we'd rather ship that when it's actually good than ship something half-working today.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit the text that's already in a PDF, or only add new elements?

AFileFix lets you add new elements on top of the existing PDF — text boxes, signatures, dates, checkboxes, images, drawings. It doesn't let you edit the original text inside the PDF (replacing "John Smith" with "Jane Doe" in an existing paragraph, for example). For that, convert the PDF to Word using PDF to Word, edit in Word, then convert back.

Will my signature stay attached if someone re-saves or edits the PDF?

Yes — once AFileFix processes your PDF, signatures and other added elements are "flattened" into the file, meaning they become part of the document structure rather than floating annotations. Anyone opening the result sees the signature as part of the page. They can still add their own annotations or sign elsewhere, but they can't remove your signature without intentionally editing the PDF itself.

Does AFileFix work on iPad or tablet?

Yes for tablets in landscape orientation with a keyboard (functionally similar to a laptop). For phone-sized screens, the editor shows a "use desktop" message — the precision needed for placing signatures and form text isn't realistic on a small touch screen. We've prioritized "block it cleanly" over "ship a frustrating mobile experience." A mobile editor is on our roadmap.
